COVID-19 & Safe Meetings

COVID-19 & Safe Meetings

Our San Diego Convention Center team prioritizes the health and safety of attendees, exhibitors, staff and business partners. With a diligent infection prevention program, outdoor spaces in San Diego's temperate year-round climate, and collaboration with centers across California, we are preparing to be among the nation’s safest venues when we reopen for meetings and events.

Reopening Status

Our Convention Center is closed for events through December 2020. See our event calendar for details. The exact timeline for reopening depends on state and local revisions to restrictions on public gatherings. When we’re able to welcome event activity back to the building, we will be fully prepared to do so, with enhanced policies and procedures in place.

For regional public health orders and updates, see the County of San Diego Public Health Order, the City of San Diego Coronavirus resource page, and the San Diego Tourism Authority's Safe Travel page. We will continue to post updates here and stay in communication with event organizers regarding news and plans.

Our Commitment to Your Health & Well-being

GBAC SealOur team is committed to upholding the highest standards of cleanliness throughout our facility. In light of the dramatic changes to public health guidance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have updated many of our protocols to help ensure the safety and security of everyone who walks through our doors.

Reopening Guide

See our San Diego Convention Center Reopening Guide (PDF) for information about social distancing, infection prevention, PPE, health monitoring, and additional industry best practices we are implementing. Please consider this guide to be in draft form as we await further guidance from state officials.

Certified Protocols

In July 2020, our Center became one of the first convention centers in the United States to achieve the prestigious GBAC STAR™ facility accreditation. Under the guidance of the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC), we have a program of stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention. We are evolving these plans as new information becomes available to us and as we continue preparing to reopen for meetings and events.

We also became the first of Centerplate's North American venues to achieve the Rise SAFE hygiene verification label for food and beverage services. To earn the label, our catering team passed a site audit and protocol review covering 36 checkpoints in four core areas: process, people/training, facilities, and hygiene/cleaning. Rise SAFE is managed by Centerplate’s parent company, Sodexo, and Bureau Veritas, an independent world leader in testing, inspection, and certification.

Partner Protocols

Our on-site service partners are dedicated to the health and safety of our clients and guests. Please see their detailed cleaning and safety protocols below.

Temporary Shelter

On April 1, 2020, several of our exhibit halls began serving as temporary homeless shelters in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among vulnerable individuals in our region. Together with our partners at the City of San Diego, we will ensure a smooth transition from the temporary shelter project to our event activities.

Following the closure of the shelter, an extensive third-party cleaning and disinfecting process will be completed throughout all our spaces where the shelter is operating. This process will meet or exceed standards of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) and comply with CDC guidance for providing clean and sanitary environments.

After the third party completes their work, our SDCC team will conduct an additional deep-cleaning and disinfecting process to guarantee we are ready to begin welcoming events and attendees back to our premier gathering place.
