For San Diego convention attendees, the ease and speed of catching a flight at the nearby San Diego International Airport (on the same street even!) is a massive weight off their shoulders. After a days-long convention, which often leaves people feeling as though they don’t want to leave America’s finest city, the 10-minute trip to the airport is a breeze. From now through 2024, however, we encourage allowing yourself extra time to catch your flight. The airport is beginning construction on a more modern and efficient Terminal 1. This construction will remove access to the former Terminal 1 parking lot, and while most of our attendees do not need to park a car for their departing flight, the increased traffic congestion could set you back some time on the way to the terminal entrance. Here are some tips to keep in mind when heading to the airport:
Take Public Transit:
Check out the MTS Trip Planner for the quickest routes. Less than a mile from SDCC is the Santa Fe Depot, where the 992 Bus route offers direct service to the airport. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2022, this service is free (one-way only)!
Get Dropped Off:
Travel by taxi, rideshare service, or have a friend drop you off—and don’t forget to check if your hotel offers an airport shuttle! Be sure whoever is driving you is aware of the likely construction delays.
Picking someone up?
The usual cell phone lot has been moved to the other end of the airport and is now located at 2311 McCain Road. As you approach the airport, go past Terminal 2 and take a right on McCain road. Then just follow the signs! This will be much easier than circling as you wait for the arrival.
