The San Diego Convention Center's Sails Pavilion transformed into a tranquil, yoga studio for one night during a free, community event.
In collaboration with the Downtown San Diego Partnership, nearly 1,000 yogis of all fitness levels shared mats across the exhibit space floor during the inaugural "Sunset Yoga Under the Sails."
As the sun set on Wednesday, August 29, guests found their flow under the illuminated Sails Pavilion LED colored lights, creating a unique, serene ambiance. The Vinyasa-style class, led by San Diego yoga veteran and Doctor of Physical Therapy Lauren Padula, was set to gentle beats by DJ Justin Kanoya.
"This yoga event shows the opportunities that exist in our iconic downtown space and highlights the collaborative efforts in the community," said San Diego Convention Center Board Chair Gil Cabrera. "'Sunset Yoga Under the Sails' was a year in the making, and is part of our ongoing commitment to open our doors to everyone. What better way to find your Zen, then with views of the city and the bayfront under our colored Sails Pavilion lights!"

"On any given day, our team at the San Diego Convention Center is building 'small cities' which become the conventions that benefit the San Diego region as a whole," said San Diego Convention Center Corporation President & CEO Rip Rippetoe. "We are also in the experience business. And this event transformed a space that has been used as traditionally as an exhibit space, banquet room or registration area into a yoga studio."
The Downtown San Diego Partnership team has produced several popular yoga events around town, including Yoga on the Midway and weekly Free Yoga in the City classes.
"Downtown has it all," said Betsy Brennan, President and CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, was among the yogis who participated. "It is a place where people gather together to experience a vibrancy like none other: a place to meet new people, try new things or do things you already love. Many thanks to the entire San Diego Convention Center team for hosting this event and for their dedication to San Diego's urban core."
