Tuni Kyi Appointed to San Diego Convention Center Corporation Board of Directors

The San Diego City Council approved Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s appointment of Tuni Kyi to the San Diego Convention Center Corporation Board of Directors on Tuesday, March 21. Additionally, the City Council voted to reappoint Gil Cabrera and Candace M. Carroll to the Board of Directors.

Carroll, a highly-regarded appellate attorney with more than 30 years of experience handling appeals in the federal, state and bankruptcy appellate courts, has been named the 2017 Chair of the San Diego Convention Center Board of Directors. Cabrera will serve as the Board’s Vice Chair.

Kyi will join the seven-member board that sets policy for the Corporation and fills the vacancy left by Mohsen Khalegi who stepped down from the Board to join the Corporation as its Senior Vice President of Business Development.

Kyi retired from Marriott International after 37 years of service and started a consulting firm in January 2017. He has served on the Boards of the San Diego Tourism Authority, San Diego Lodging Industry Association, and Tourism Marketing District.

Kyi joined Marriott in 1979 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Missouri and most recently was General Manager at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. Over the years, Tuni has held a variety of key property and regional positions, including Chief Lodging Services Officer for the Americas Division of Marriott International, Inc.,  Senior Vice President of International Operations; Vice President and General Manager at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida; Area Vice President, Greater China and S.E. Asia at Marriott Regional Office in Hong Kong; Vice President and Area General Manager of the J W Marriott Hotel Hong Kong; Area General Manager of the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington County, Northern Virginia; General Manager of the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California; Regional Director of Operations in the Western and Pacific region and Regional Director of Food & Beverage in the New York region.

The San Diego Convention Center Board of Directors sets policy for the public benefit corporation that was created by the City of San Diego to exclusively manage, market and operate the 2.6 million-square-foot waterfront facility.

The San Diego Convention Center is the region’s premiere gathering place, hosting conventions, trade shows and community events that economically benefit the City of San Diego and advances our convention and tourism industry.
