What’s on the Menu for Comic-Con 2018

Add another collectible item to your must-buy list while you’re at Comic-Con 2018. For a fourth year in a row, the San Diego Convention Center is offering attendees a unique and fun set of comic-themed chocolate bars.

Each year, the Convention Center's in-house food and beverage team Centerplate works to come up with new savory sweets.

Executive Chef Daryl O'Donnell and Pastry Chef Mathew Haven collaboratively choose the theme and flavors for each bar.

The collectible bars up for grabs this year include:

  • Anime: A crisp wafer dipped in matcha white chocolate and a color splatter shell
  • Dragon Glass: Cocoa nib brittle coated in milk chocolate in a dark chocolate shell
  • Kryptonite: Dark chocolate with green “pop-rocks” in a green-white chocolate shell
  • S'mores: A fan favorite, consisting of dark chocolate filled with marshmallows and graham crackers

This year, more than 3,000 chocolate bars will be made and wrapped in the Convention Center's very own kitchen, totaling to 650 pounds of Belgian chocolate.

"It takes about an hour and a half to make about 100 candy bars," Haven said. "This year, we will spend more than 45 hours just making the bars."

All chocolate bar wrapper artwork was made by the Convention Center’s in-house design team.

You can find these outside of Ballroom 20. And pay attention to what's inside the wrapper. Four lucky attendees will find Golden Tickets good for a $100 Starbucks gift card. Just bring your winning ticket to the Convention Center Con-Fections concession stand located outside of Ballroom 20.

New and Notable Menu Items

Fish tacos and craft beer are the ideal food and beverage pairing when it comes to San Diego. Your San Diego Convention Center has embraced this pairing by adding a unique addition to the Comic-Con convention culinary experience: an in-house fish taco cart.

"We begin with our signature craft-beer batter made with Red Trolley Ale, a classic red ale brewed by one of San Diego’s original craft breweries, Karl Strauss," said Executive Chef Daryl O'Donnell. "Then we batter and lightly fry fresh cod, top it with shredded cabbage, jalapeno-cilantro aioli, lime and serve on warm white corn tortillas."

"From frying the craft-beer-battered cod, to pressing the tortillas, each step of preparation is completed on our custom cart, made to order directly in front of our customers," said Centerplate. General Manager Gabriel "Bobby" Ramirez.

The tacos will be for sale in the Sails Pavilion during Comic-Con.

In addition, you’ve asked for it and we listened. For those looking for healthy food options, attendees can enjoy a Kale Caesar Wrap as well as a selection of fresh salads. Centerplate will also be serving up Vegan Burgers (plant-based protein) and Gluten-Friendly Wraps.

  • The Kale Caesar Chicken Wrap will be offered at Concession Stands in Exhibit Halls B, C, D, E, F and the Bayside East.
  • The Vegan Burger will be offered at Concession Stands in Exhibit Halls D, E, F and the Sails Pavilion.
