San Diego Convention Center Achieves APEX/ASTM Sustainability Certification

Sustainability is a fundamental part of the San Diego Convention Center. It has been one of our core features since we were a new building and we have only become better and better at operating the region's premier gathering place while minimizing our environmental footprint. That is why we are proud to announce that we have achieved Level Three certification to the APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards.

This certification was tailor-made for the meeting and events industry. It created specific performance criteria in staff management policy, communications, waste management, energy, air quality, water, procurement, and community partners. Level Three is a significant achievement for convention centers in our industry.

"I remember when we started our recycling program in the early 90s," said Donald Bottger, Director of Facility Services. "Even back then, we saw all the aluminum cans and plastic bottles that went through our facility. We're incredibly proud to have come so far, and be at the forefront of the industry in sustainability."

This achievement also benefits our current customers because they know that to hold an event sustainably it needs to be a sustainable venue. In addition, having this certification will entice new customers who want to make sure they are operating as sustainably as possible.

"The Events Industry Council congratulates the San Diego Convention Center Corporation on achieving Venue Level Three," said Karen Kotowski, CAE, CMP, President and CEO, Events Industry Council, the professional meetings association that led the development of the standards. "This demonstrates a strong commitment to the environmentally and socially responsible practices that are needed to support long-term sustainability in our industry."

Some of the highlights of our environmentally conscious efforts include:

  • Replacing the 1,208 light fixtures in our entire exhibit hall with LEDs.
  • We recycle 100 percent of cardboard that comes through the facility.
  • Our Food & Beverage partner Centerplate purchases in the local 100-mile club range whenever season allows.
  • There are no garbage disposals in our kitchens – food scraps are composted and reused by local gardeners. Untouched food that hasn't spoiled gets donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission.

About a year ago, on April 19, 2017, we received our LEED Gold certification. Additionally, Mayor Kevin Faulconer presented a proclamation declaring the day as "San Diego Convention Center Excellence in Sustainability Day." It is fitting that one year later we can celebrate this anniversary with a new sustainability recognition.
