Convention Center Annual Report Earns Design Awards

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is proud to announce that its annual report has earned two international design awards. The year-end fiscal report, showcasing a record fiscal year in 2016, received accolades in both the 47th Creativity International Media & Interactive Design Awards as well as Graphic Design USA.

In addition, the Corporation's visitor-serving publication, the San Diego Attendee Guide, was also honored among the best digital magazine. The convention center's infographic-centric social media campaign designed to energize attendance for the 2016 MLB All-Star FanFest was also recognized for its unique approach.

Combined, entries came from 26 countries, three Canadian provinces and 22 U.S. states. Entries were judged by creative and art directors from all over the U.S. as well as international agencies, in-house design directors, photographers and copywriters. Here is a look at the winning submissions.

2017 Creativity International Silver Award and GDUSA American InHouse Design Awards

As part of our fiscal responsibility, the Convention Center produces an annual audited fiscal year-end report. The goal is to showcase the economic impact of the facility to the region and to summarize the year in review. While annual reports tend to be text heavy, the convention center brand has reinvisioned the "old-school" text-heavy pages of an organization's financials. We now tell our story with pictures, using the text as supplementary content. And the result is a more visually stimulating and user-friendly approach to financial reporting.

2017 Creativity International Silver Award 

With San Diego being in the top five destinations for meeting planners to bring their events, the convention center plays a role in providing visitor-serving amenities, including the annual San Diego Convention Center Attendee Guide. The publication produced exclusively by the convention center's in-house team, is a resource for attendees and meeting planners and provides local businesses, shops, restaurants and attractions a way to reach more than 800,000 guests who visit our venue. Distributed for free, it helps prepare attendees and visitors to the region with relevant information about the facility and the surrounding area while helping meeting planners generate excitement about the destination their meeting or conference will be held. The new guide for 2017-2018 is out now!

2017 Creativity International Silver Award

It is estimated that more than 100,000 people attended the five-day 2016 MLB All-Star FanFest event at the San Diego Convention Center, held from July 8 through July 12, 2017. The convention center’s exhibit floor was transformed into the world’s biggest interactive baseball theme park. Sports fans of all ages met and took photos with MLB Hall of Famers and current baseball stars. The convention center's team worked with Major League Baseball (MLB) on a campaign to promote the event. One social media campaign played upon the art of collecting baseball cards as a promotion tool to generate excitement for the event. Each "card" contained a fun fact about the event and the venue, correlating to the day of the countdown, which lasted for 30 days. The numeric-centric cards covered topics including: the history of the All-Star Game, the convention center, FanFest event programming and benefits the event brings to the City of San Diego.

2017 Creativity International Bronze Award

The San Diego Convention Center was thrilled to welcome a first-time event: TwitchCon from September 30 to October 2, 2016. The event brought an estimated 41,000 people to our convention center, according to Twitch and generated an estimated $3.9 million in regional economic impact. The San Diego Convention Center Communications Department decided to take advantage of utilizing video to showcase how we build "small cities" during conventions – in this case for TwitchCon – by hanging a GoPro above our exhibit floor. For over 72 hours, photos from our camera were snapped as the exhibit floor was transformed from an empty space to a filled exhibit hall. It is a model that was so successful, we have utilized it for several other clients and projects. The use of GoPro, high-definition images to take people "behind-the-scenes."

GDUSA American InHouse Design Awards

The San Diego Convention Center is proud to be the home of Comic-Con International. The pop-culture phenomenon is filled with one-of-a-kind experiences. Among them? Chocolate Bars made in-house by our food and beverage team from Centerplate. A limited number of bars are sold: 1,200 to be exact. Custom chocolate bars require custom labels. And Graphic Design USA presented an American InHouse Design Award to our team for their "Convention Con-Fections" collector labels in the flavors of:

  • Coffee n' Donuts
  • The Elvis
  • S'mores
  • Potato Chip

We are in the experience business here at the San Diego Convention Center. And each of these award-winning items are designed to fulfill our purpose: to be the region's premier gathering place, hosting conventions, trade shows and events that benefit the city and region of San Diego and advances our convention and tourism industry.
