San Diego Named 5th Top Meeting Destination by Cvent

The results are in: San Diego ranks as the fifth top meetings and conventions destination in the United States, according to a new survey by Cvent. The 2017 rankings were released on May 16, and show San Diego as the only West Coast city to land in the top 10.

Cvent, a national meeting software and services company, evaluated more than 5,000 cities, over the course of 11 months to create a ranking of the top 50 cities. The rankings are based on the number of event proposals, total room nights, and the variety of qualified meeting venues, from Cvent’s database of more than 200,000 hotels, resorts and special event locations. This is the sixth year that Cvent has released its list.

"San Diego is attractive because it really is about the whole package," said President and CEO Clifford "Rip" Rippetoe, CFE. "We are told time and time again that people choose the San Diego Convention Center because we go above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. We also realize that our guests choose San Diego because of the destination as a package. Along with our award-winning facility, our city boasts the beautiful scenery, perfect weather and world-famous attractions, all within walking distance."

The San Diego Convention Center proudly has a 70 percent of return business. And that's thanks to our relationships with our customers.

Take for example the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Annual Session, held April 21 through April 25, 2017. An estimated 17,000 people attended the event, generating approximately $48.6 million in regional impact and $28.7 million in attendee spending.

AAO Senior Meetings Manager Pam Hoffmann, CFP ranks her experience as "outstanding." She also gave the team and the destination of San Diego a 5 out of 5 in terms of attractions, restaurants, safety, transportation and overall satisfaction.

"I hesitate to compare the San Diego Convention Center to other cities simply because it's incomparable. This being said, all of the SDCC team that we at AAO worked with were nothing less than extremely professional, knowledgeable and personable. I would love to work with each of them again in the future," she said.

In addition, San Diego’s growing innovation economy, biotech and technology sector, international connections with Mexico, and even our world famous craft beer culture, proves the destination is thriving with opportunity for research and business ventures.

The health care and medical meetings market is highly competitive and the booming sectors of biotechnology and research help make San Diego that much more attractive. That is why a record 21 medical meetings will be held this fiscal year, including BIO 2017 which will attract an anticipated 16,000 attendees this summer.
