Pardon Our Dust: Convention Center Renovations Underway

On any given week, the San Diego Convention Center is bustling with conventions and events, welcoming thousands of guests from all around the world into our facility. But there's been even more activity lately, due to construction and renovation projects that will enhance the center.

Among the projects: a brand new concrete floor for the iconic Sails Pavilion exhibit space. A total of 2,500 tons of concrete was removed from the space and new concrete is being laid, covering 108,450 square feet. The $3.5 million project began on December 8, 2016 and will be completed by the end of March 2017.

The first new concrete was poured on February 1. The 90,000 square foot exhibit hall will begin getting its new concrete floor on February 7.

A leader in sustainability, the convention center made sure not to throw the old concrete away. Instead, it was broken up and is being recycled and repurposed into new concrete.

The Sails Pavilion concrete renovation is part of the largest series of upgrades in the building’s history. A majority of the work began in December 2016, when $25.5 million in funding for eight major projects was received from the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank (IBank). The other funding is coming from the Convention Center's reserve fund, set aside for Capital Improvement Projects.

Later in the summer of 2017, the fabric on the white sail roof structure will be replaced. The public will be able to see sections of the iconic roof removed, one piece at a time.

Among the other major projects at the center:

  • Installation of LED lighting in the Exhibit Hall
  • Upgrades to elevators and escalators
  • New Cooling Towers to assist in cooling and heating the facility

The Convention Center has added a new interactive web page that allows you to see the projects as they are underway and explore photos showcasing the projects through their different states of renovation. We invite you to explore all the work that is underway to continue to make the San Diego Convention Center the region's premiere gathering place for conventions, tradeshows and events.
