Employees are Heart and Soul of San Diego Convention Center

The San Diego Convention Center opened its doors for the first time on November 24, 1989. For the past 26 years, the convention center has been a catalyst for the San Diego economy. With over 5,300 events held – including major medical meetings, Comic-Con, community events like the San Diego International Auto Show, and numerous trainings and expos – these events have attracted nearly 20 million visitors, bringing with them an estimated $10.8 billion in direct attendee spending to the region.

The convention center has never closed its doors since opening and every day since, thousands of San Diegans have served as employees, some part-time, others contracted and many full-time. At the heart of this facility is a diverse staff of 420 men and women who come to work and love their jobs. Many of these employees have been here since day one and we gathered some of them together (pictured above) to reflect on their experience.

Ron Barham, Building Superintendent: Oversees the day-to-day operations of the entire facility.

“I feel very blessed to have found a position like this, because there are certain days where you really want to come to work, and certain days where you just love – downright love – to come to work. It’s like you can’t wait to get here, I can’t say enough good things about this place.”

Joy Peacock Jones, National Sales Manager: Maintains relationships with our clients throughout the booking process.

“Each of my 25 years has been a great experience – we have great clients, we have great coworkers and we have great partners outside the convention center that support us and make every day very special.”

Lydia Ochoa, Senior Event Manager: Works in-partnership with the client meeting planners to help make their events a success.

“I’ve been extremely blessed to work here for 25 years. There is a sense of unity and pride being a part of this organization; we are a united group that comes together every day to do what we love.”

Victor Zarudny, Cleaning Services Worker: Member of the Facility Services team responsible for the overall aesthetic presentation and cleanliness of the facility.

“The people here care about each other. We are not just coworkers, we are family. Everyone comes to work here because they love it.”

Jose Barrios, HVAC Engineer: Part of the team that controls the heating, ventilation and air conditioning for the entire facility.

“It’s a very exciting place to work: the variety of people, where they come from, their backgrounds – it’s a great group of people and I couldn’t ask to work for a better place.”

Grace Zuniga, Cleaning Services Worker: Member of the Facility Services team responsible for the overall aesthetic presentation and cleanliness of the facility.

“It has been a pleasure to work here for 25 years. I have learned so much and have the greatest boss ever, our CEO Carol Wallace. I watched this building go up, I worked here through the Phase II Expansion and I hope to see Phase III.”

Adelia Herrera, Receptionist: Customer service representative and the first person you will meet upon entering the administrative offices.

“It’s been a truly remarkable experience working here, because you see so many different things every day. I started as the youngest housekeeper and have grown up with everyone. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

The San Diego Convention Center takes pride in our phenomenal staff. They truly make a difference and are in a large part the reason that approximately 70 percent of our business is repeat business.

These are only a handful of the many employees at the convention center who are devoted to providing our clients and guests with outstanding service.
