Fun Facts: Esri UC Puts San Diego on the Map

Mapping matters this week at the San Diego Convention Center.

The Esri Users Conference (Esri UC) is the largest gathering of GIS professionals anywhere in the world! The event has been hosted at our convention center since 1997. And according to the event’s meeting planners, each year, the conference grows.

This year an estimated 16,000 people from 132 countries are expected to attend the conference. Here is a more detailed look at the breakdown.

  • 82 percent of attendees are from the United States
  • 18 percent of attendees are international
  • 1,887 Esri staff from around the world

A lot of work goes into setting up the exhibit floor and making sure the event is wired for all that data! Set up includes:

  • Over six (6) football fields of square feet of carpet
  • 1,275 laptops and desktops
  • 13 semi-truck trailers carrying 125 tons of freight

The event itself is amazing:

  • More than 1,000 sessions to choose from including 400 technical sessions
  • 399 sponsors and exhibitors
  • Displaying more than 725 maps in the Map Gallery

Where is Esri’s software used?

  • More than 350,000 organizations worldwide, including the 200 largest U.S. cities
  • By more than two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies
  • Used by more than 7,000 colleges and universities

Esri built this 3-D story map of things to do for attendees at the conference: View Map

Want to come, but you aren’t a user? While the Esri UC is open only to users of the software, the User Experience & User Interface Exchange is open to anyone in the community who has an interest in user experience, user interface/visual design, icon design, interaction design, information architecture, and usability research. The event is useful to anyone in usability-related community groups, as well as local universities and colleges. You can still register online and even onsite: Register now.

Esri will return to the San Diego Convention Center next year, so save the date: June 27 to July 1, 2016.
