Shared Space: Mixing Business with Fitness

As a public space, it’s known that the San Diego Convention Center – specifically our grand staircase with its 100 steps – is a popular destination for locals and visitors looking to stay fit. It’s important to note that there are some basic safety guidelines that we request be followed when you are on site.

First, and foremost, remember that the convention center is a busy building designed as a meeting space.

Mornings are often our busiest time for arrivals at these conventions. That means there is often heavy shuttle, bus and taxi traffic. In addition, it’s often when building maintenance, such as window cleaning and power washing of the sidewalks is performed. Your safety is very important to us during these busy times.

To avoid having our security personnel interrupt your workout, please avoid the following:

  • No large groups events or activities can be held or advertised without signing a short-term license agreement with the San Diego Convention Center Corporation
  • Workouts should not prevent pedestrian or vehicle access
  • Groups playing loud music that interferes with operations or creates a nuisance
  • Marking the property with chalk or other means
  • Setting up equipment that may cause a hazard, obstruction, or safety concern
  • Tying off equipment to the building, or blocking doors
  • Pets are allowed but they must be leashed in accordance with the city of San Diego's municipal code.

Our goal at the convention center is to create a safe and fun public space for all to use while ensuring outdoor activity does not negatively impact events at the facility or create safety concerns. Our online events calendar has a list of upcoming meetings and conventions, as well as an estimated attendance, which should be checked regularly.

There are still many running routes for you to continue to enjoy around the convention center building. You might also enjoy a bike ride around downtown that takes you from the Gaslamp, around the Embarcadero and to Balboa Park. And speaking of the park, there are miles of hiking trails waiting for you to explore.
