With Honors: Carol Wallace Receives Top Convention Industry Award

Carol Wallace, President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center accepted a top industry honor in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, May 14: she was named the 2014 Professional Achievement Supplier Honoree by the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA).

Wallace, who has been at the helm of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation for nearly 23 years, said she was humbled by the award.  “The previous award recipients have been the giants in our industry that I have looked up to with awe and admiration for so many years. I am honored to have been selected to receive the PCMA Professional Achievement Award and I am humbled to be included among the many outstanding leaders in our industry,” said Wallace.

Wallace started her career in the convention industry as the assistant general manager of the Dallas Convention Center in December 1980, on her birthday. She went on to become the executive director at the Colorado Convention Center, before joining the San Diego Convention Center Corporation in 1991 as the general manager. She was promoted to CEO in 1994, and has served with seven mayors and 22 chairs of the corporation’s Board of Directors.

“On behalf of the Convention Center Corporation, the Board of Directors and staff, I want to congratulate Carol on receiving this prestigious award,” said current Board Chair Nico Ferraro. “You have helped establish the San Diego Convention Center as a world class meeting destination. Thank you for your commitment.”

“It is a privilege to honor Carol Wallace,” said PCMA President and CEO, Deborah Sexton. “Her leadership has helped advance our industry and continues to ensure the meetings and events space has a bright future.”

PCMA represents more than 6,000 meeting industry leaders throughout the globe and is considered the leading organization for meeting and event professionals.

Here are some additional facts about Wallace:

  • She is a current member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board for the Department of Commerce.
  • In July 2013, she completed eight years of service on the board of the International Association of Congress Centers (AIPC) representing the North American region.
  • She has also served on the PCMA Education Foundation Board of Trustees and was Past President of International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).
  • In 2004 she received IAVM’s highest honor, the Charles A. McElravy Award, for her exceptional leadership and extraordinary career-long accomplishments.
