Expansion Moves Forward

Following the unanimous support of the California Coastal Commission for the Phase III expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, the City of San Diego and Port of San Diego have begun the next steps necessary to ensure the expansion project breaks ground in early 2015.

Expansion Next Steps:

  • Development Permit The vote in October by the Commission set in motion the final permitting action, the issuance of a Coastal Development Permit, by the Port of San Diego. The Board of Port Commissioners is expected to take up the permit in early February at their regularly scheduled meeting. The permit is necessary before the City of San Diego can begin construction on the project.
  • Resolve Legal Challenges to Financing Plan Still unresolved is the appeal by opponents of the expansion who have challenged the legality of the financing mechanism created to fund the majority of the $520 million cost for the expansion.  In March, a court ruled the financing plan constitutional and legal. However the project cannot proceed until the appeal is resolved which is expected in 2014.

Once these milestones are met the expansion project will unfold in two phases. The first will involve relocating the current road and utilities behind the convention center. The second phase will be the construction of the expansion facility which is expected to take three years. The expansion will add 225,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space contiguous to the current facility giving San Diego the largest contiguous exhibit hall floor on the West Coast at 750,000 sq. ft.

The expansion program also includes an additional 101,000 sq. ft. of meeting rooms and an 80,000 sq. ft. ballroom with sweeping views of San Diego Bay. Atop the new facility will be a five-acre rooftop park with multiple programmable areas including an outdoor performance venue capable of hosting events of up to 4,500 people.
