Meeting Planners Voice Support of Contiguous Center Expansion

Clients of the San Diego Convention Center have added their voices to the broad base of local support for the contiguous expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, which faces its last major permitting hurdle on October 10, 2013 before the California Coastal Commission.  The Phase III Expansion will provide San Diego with the largest contiguous exhibit hall on the West Coast, a new 80,000 square foot ballroom and an additional 101,000 square feet of meeting space. A five-acre rooftop park with programmable space and improved views, access to the waterfront and a new 500-room expansion of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel are also part of the expansion proposal.  While the expanded facility will be a new destination for residents and visitors throughout the region, the needs of our clients is an essential part of our expansion program.

Here is what just a few of the top events in the industry are saying about the current expansion plans:

"As an organization with 25,000 attendees at our annual convention, we are a strong supporter of the current plans for a contiguous expansion. As our attendance figures and exhibitors continue to grow, this added space is much needed and will allow us to keep San Diego as a convention destination for years to come."

- Christy L. Richards, Managing Director Convention Division, National Association of Realtors

"The proposed expansion will enhance access and offer our attendees a unique opportunity to view San Diego Bay as they have never seen it before: from a 5-acre public park atop the convention center. As a green organization, we appreciate that the environmentally sustainable design of the project incorporates design elements to meet LEED certification, unique rooftop landscaping that will filter and clean water that would otherwise be pumped into a sanitary sewer, and a state-of-the-art storm water retention and filtration system that will minimize water demand from the city system."

- Martha Liggett, Executive Director, American Society of Hematology

"Aside from a world-class convention facility that can host our event under one roof, our attendees and exhibitors want a convention city that is appealing with an airport that offers flights from across the U.S. and internationally. San Diego is an ideal city for us because the current convention center is surrounded by three hotels that offer more than 3,500 rooms for our attendees with thousands more within walking distance. The addition of 500 more rooms in the current proposal is also a win for us."

- Felix Niespodziewanski, Director, Convention and Meetings, American College of Surgeons
