Active Attendees: 3 Convenient Workouts You Can do Right at the San Diego Convention Center

You don’t have to let your fitness routine slide just because you are attending a convention. Whether you are looking for something active to do after a day of back-to-back sessions or have a few hours to spare before your meeting starts, there are plenty of ways to get in a workout and see some of San Diego’s best sights at the same time. Plus, a little known secret about the San Diego Convention Center is it is a fitness fanatic’s playground.

With our proximity to bayside walking paths and parks, along with our endless supply of outdoor staircases, there are plenty of workout options with no extra equipment required. Just lace up your favorite running shoes and head out the door. Here are three of our favorite workouts that you can easily fit in your schedule and experience some of that perfect San Diego weather we are always bragging about.

1. The Scenic Route

Soak up the sunshine and bay breezes on this meandering pedestrian path. You will tour of some of San Diego’s best sights as you run along the sparkling San Diego Bay with views of Coronado, the San Diego Bay Bridge and Point Loma. You’ll also pass by some great attractions like Seaport Village, the USS Midway Museum and the Greatest Generation Art Collection. With so much to see you may just forget that you are here for a workout!

Where: Start at the Hilton Bayfront Park (across Convention Way) and head north along the pedestrian path, including the path through the North and South Embarcadero Parks, up to the Broadway Pier. Return the same way you came.
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 5 miles round trip
Approximate time: 40 min to 1 hour

2. Convention Center Loop

Take a loop around the half mile long convention center to the San Diego Bay. Along the way you can stop at the park and incorporate some boot camp-style drills on the grass or follow the fitness trail, or “par course,” to boost your workout at the exercise stations.

Where: Start on our Front Drive and head south towards Hall H. Cross Convention Way over to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and follow along the bay around South Embarcadero Park. Continue back towards the convention center’s back staircase and follow the signage to make your way between the Marriott Marquis and Marina and the convention center. You will have made a complete loop back to the Front Drive.
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate (depending on how many sit-ups you do)
Length: 2 miles (approximate)
Approximate time: 20-30 minutes

3. 20 Minutes of Power

Only have a few minutes to spare before your next session? Take the stairs! Local fitness gurus line up at the base of our Grand Staircase daily to tackle this grueling workout. A climb to the top will ensure you get your calorie burn in. Try it as a timed challenge; see how many times you can make it to the top in 20 minutes. For an extra bonus, once you hit the top, keep going west for a loop around the Observation Deck to see the sweeping views of Coronado and the San Diego Bay. We guarantee the view from the top is worth the climb.

Where: The Grand Staircase on the convention center Front Drive
Difficulty: Hard
Length: 100 steps to the top!
Approximate time: 15-20 minutes (or as long as you are still standing)

While you are packing up for your next San Diego conference, be sure to throw in your running shoes. This time, you won’t regret it.
